We're pleased to introduce you to Lachlan Dunn, Hedgehog's Industrial Designer. Based in Brisbane, Australia, Lachlan brings great energy and perspective to our projects and products. 1) What do you think is most unique about Hedgehog Dryers? I think the most unique thing about the Hedgehog range of products is that we have genuinely tried to "Solve the Need" from the ground up. Rather than re-modelling or re-packaging someone else's product that has been flogged half to death, Hedgehog genuinely takes a fresh approach to finding a solution through design and research. 2) Where did you learn about industrial design? I completed my first degree in sculpture at Southern Cross University in 1997. The following year I tendered for a couple of large scale street sculpture works. I learned the hard way that I did not possess the skills to be able to communicate my artistic concepts in a method that was tangible enough to be received by architects and / or town planners. I decided to study Industrial Design to develop these skills. I chose Industrial Design over Architecture as it is more object-based rather than environment-based. 3) Do you have any mottos that you like most/try to embrace in life? I like to think of life as though we are all bobbing up and down in an ocean; waves of the events of everyday life keep crashing in around you. Everyone has the choice; you can either sit there in your life raft – waves crashing in and demanding of the world, “Why is this happening to me! I don’t deserve this!” or you can choose to ride the wave. 4) What are your favorite outdoor activities? My passion is Mountain Biking, but I also volunteer at the sailing club my kids sail at – Humpybong Yacht Club. I spend most Sundays on the water teaching kids how to sail. Actually, if you were to ask my kids, they would say my most common mantra is, “Pull on the sheet!” 5) Anything else you would like to add about Hedgehog Dryer? The story of Hedgehog is a true David and Goliath story. Hedgehog does not have the backing of your big multinational brands. When Bjorn asked me to design the original dryer, I designed it from home on my 8-year-old PC while we were in lockdown from COVID. The fact that Hedgehog has won numerous design awards is testimony that, even in today’s disposable world good, design and ingenuity is more valuable than market share.
